ACADEMICS Overview
Early Childhood Program (Infant & Toddler)
In June 2010, Episcopal Day School will offer, for the first time, curriculum-based programming for children beginning at six weeks of age. As part of the Episcopal Day School, the early childhood program at the newly acquired St. Michael's Campus will provide the same warm, nurturing, environment for children, small teacher-to-student ratio, and age-appropriate developmental activities as children have enjoyed at EDS for nearly 60 years. Existing EDS preschool programs will be moved to the new campus and expanded programming for infants and toddlers will be added.
The early childhood program at the St. Michael's Campus will be geared toward serving the needs of the working family and will be open year round from 7:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. This innovative endeavor will be a hands-on learning environment, highlights of which include a student created butterfly garden, a student-maintained Manna food garden, and a labyrinth - all to enable children to discover for themselves the beauty, richness and worth of God's blessings. A constructivist learning environment combined with a highly capable staff and stimulating curriculum promises to reinvigorate young childhood education in downtown Pensacola.
Pre-School Program (PreK3 & PreK4) ....tiny seedlings into mighty oaks grow....
The Preschool program at EDS allows children the opportunity to develop individual talents and abilities and experience success in academic and social situations. Making friends, learning to make good choices, and accepting responsibility each day are all important components of an early childhood program. Play is also important in a quality program and is an integral part of each day. Through play, young children learn to share, cooperate, take turns, and work together in a respectful manner. Our hope is that by exposing children to a variety of experiences, we will instill in them a desire to be lifelong learners. Children attend special area classes throughout the week including Christian Education, Spanish, Library, Technology Lab and Music. Preschool students have their own Chapel service, "Wee Worship" held every Monday.
Lower School Program (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)
The learning environment in the Lower School provides students with a solid, academic foundation in a Christ-centered, nurturing environment. Instructional goals emphasize the emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual needs of each child. Students receive classroom instruction in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. In addition, students receive instruction from special area teachers in art, Christian education, music, physical education, Spanish, technology lab and library. The faculty strives to integrate these instructional programs to create cross-curricular connections that provide students with a broader understanding of the subject matter. Students attend Devotions and Chapel services each week.
Upper School Program (5th - 8th Grade)
The EDS Upper School program is a rigorous and challenging curriculum for students in fifth through eighth grade. Upper School students attend six classes a day composed of the four core curriculum subjects (math, science, English and social studies) and two enrichment classes in a departmentalized setting. The curriculum is sequential and based on the Sunshine State Standards. We provide accelerated academic instruction to prepare students for high school and stress Christian values and service opportunities. Students are able to participate in various sports clubs and activities to engage and enrich their academic experiences.
